{"id":254712,"date":"2026-04-07T09:11:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T08:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=254712"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:11:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T08:11:27","slug":"wireless-boss-melvin-benn-defends-kanye-west-booking-we-are-not-giving-him-a-platform-to-extol-opinion-of-whatever-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wireless-boss-melvin-benn-defends-kanye-west-booking-we-are-not-giving-him-a-platform-to-extol-opinion-of-whatever-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Wireless boss Melvin Benn defends Kanye West booking: &#8216;We are not giving him a platform to extol opinion of whatever nature.&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Melvin Benn<\/strong>, Managing Director of <strong>Festival Republic \u2013 the promoter behind London&#8217;s Wireless festival \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0has issued a personal statement defending the decision to book <strong>Ye (Kanye West)<\/strong> as sole headliner of all three nights of the festival this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Benn condemns the rapper&#8217;s past antisemitic remarks while calling on critics to &#8220;offer some forgiveness and hope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Benn&#8217;s statement\u00a0comes as the fallout from the booking continues to mount.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/pepsi-and-diageo-withdraw-sponsorship-of-uks-wireless-festival-as-kanye-west-booking-sparks-backlash\/\">As previously reported by <em>MBW<\/em><\/a>, at least three sponsors \u2014 including headline partner <strong>Pepsi<\/strong>, spirits giant <strong>Diageo<\/strong>, and <strong>Rockstar Energy <\/strong>\u2014 have withdrawn from the festival since the booking was announced. <strong>UK<\/strong> government ministers are also understood to be reviewing whether to grant Ye permission to enter the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am a deeply committed anti-fascist and have been all my adult life,&#8221; Benn wrote. The festival is scheduled to run from <strong>July 10\u201312<\/strong> at <strong>Finsbury Park<\/strong> in north <strong>London<\/strong> \u2014 his first performances in the <strong>UK<\/strong> since he headlined <strong>Glastonbury<\/strong> in <strong>2015<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The booking drew immediate condemnation from <strong>UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/strong>, who called it &#8220;deeply concerning,&#8221; and <strong>London Mayor Sadiq Khan<\/strong>, whose office said Ye&#8217;s past comments were &#8220;simply not reflective of London&#8217;s values.&#8221; <strong>Liberal Democrat<\/strong> leader <strong>Ed Davey<\/strong> went further, calling for Ye to be banned from entering the <strong>UK<\/strong> altogether.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p><strong>Australia<\/strong> revoked Ye&#8217;s visa in <strong>July 2025<\/strong> after he released a track titled <em>Heil Hitler<\/em> in <strong>May<\/strong> of that year.<\/p>\n<p>The Wireless sponsor withdrawals echo the wave of corporate departures that followed Ye&#8217;s <strong>2022<\/strong> antisemitic remarks, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/adidas-terminates-kanye-west-partnership-talent-agency-caa-drops-him-as-a-client\/\"><strong>Adidas<\/strong> terminated its Yeezy partnership with the artist<\/a>, citing a short-term negative impact of up to <strong>\u20ac250 million<\/strong> on the company&#8217;s net income.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Festival Republic<\/strong>, which promotes <strong>Wireless<\/strong>, is a division of <strong>Live Nation<\/strong>. The shows coincide with the release of Ye&#8217;s new album, <em>Bully<\/em>, which he launched with two nights at <strong>SoFi Stadium<\/strong> in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> last week.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Ye published a full-page apology advertisement in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, stating: &#8220;I am not a Nazi or an antisemite.
