In mid-2024, the <b>Recording Industry Association of America<\/b>\u00a0(<a class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; RIAA [510 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/riaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RIAA<\/a>), on behalf of all three major record companies,\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/major-record-companies-sue-ai-music-generators-suno-udio-for-mass-infringement-of-copyright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a>\u00a0Suno and rival\u00a0<b>Udio<\/b>\u00a0for \u201cmass infringement\u201d of copyright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Udio<\/strong> settled with <b><a class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [4,476 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Music Group<\/a><\/b>\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-settles-udio-lawsuit-strikes-deal-for-licensed-ai-music-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in October<\/a>, followed by\u00a0<b><a class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Warner Music Group [3,498 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warner Music Group<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wmg.com\/news\/warner-music-group-and-udio-collaborate-to-build-a-new-licensed-music-creation-service\" rel=\"noopener\">in November<\/a>, with both music companies signing licensing deals with Udio for an AI music platform due to launch this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then, in November, Warner Music Group<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-settles-with-suno-strikes-first-of-its-kind-deal-with-ai-song-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> also struck a deal with Suno, <\/a>settling litigation between the two companies. Suno is building new layers of creativity and connectivity that didn\u2019t exist before, and I\u2019m energized to help bring that vision to life alongside the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Elsewhere, as reported by MBW earlier this month, a PR battle appeared to have been breaking out between the world&#8217;s most prominent AI music company and the world&#8217;s largest music rights company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Paul Sinclair <\/strong>penned a lengthy post-Grammy Week LinkedIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/open-studios-walled-gardens-paul-sinclair-lxxae\/?trackingId=Zx7ytjZNShuchjJQPBr%2F5w%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> entitled &#8220;Open Studios, not walled gardens,&#8221; which took direct aim at the approach championed by <strong>Universal Music Group<\/strong> in its recent AI licensing agreements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">UMG was the first major to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-settles-udio-lawsuit-strikes-deal-for-licensed-ai-music-platform\/\"><span class=\"s1\">settle its litigation with Suno rival Udio<\/span><\/a> (in October 2025), alongside a licensing deal for a new AI platform set to launch in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The concept of a &#8220;walled garden&#8221; was introduced within that announcement \u2013 a model where AI-generated music cannot be downloaded or distributed outside the platform. Udio disabled downloads, with users given a 48-hour grace period to retrieve previously created tracks before the walls went up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Warner Music Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-settles-udio-lawsuit-strikes-licensing-deal-with-ai-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">followed with its own Udio settlement<\/a> in November, implementing similar restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But when WMG then signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-settles-with-suno-strikes-first-of-its-kind-deal-with-ai-song-generator\/\"><span class=\"s1\">separate deal with Suno<\/span><\/a> later that month, the terms proved notably different.\u00a0 Suno retained much of its core functionality, including the ability for users to create songs and download them.<\/p>\n<p>Just over a month after that deal was announced, in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sir-lucian-grainge-talks-ai-music-superfans-in-2026-memo-taking-swipe-at-firms-validating-business-models-that-fail-to-respect-artists-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">annual memo to staff<\/span><\/a>, UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge appeared to warn against firms &#8220;validating business models that fail to respect artists&#8217; work and creativity, and promote the exponential growth of AI slop on streaming platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Michael Nash, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at UMG, explained the company&#8217;s position in further detail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Qm_pk5j9Tc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during an appearance<\/a> on Billboard&#8217;s On The Record podcast last month, and outlined the walled garden concept in stark terms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The concept [of a walled garden] is to set up through AI a component of the service for deep interaction with the artists and the content, but not to create derivatives that you then take off of the platform and post all over your socials and post on Spotify and Amazon Music, and Apple,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He argued that by doing so, you &#8220;effectively use artists&#8217; content and their brand to create derivatives where you&#8217;re going to compete with the artist on other platforms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Sirota is described by Suno as a &#8220;widely regarded&#8221; and &#8220;forward-thinking industry leader known for constructing partnerships that deliver new growth opportunities for artists, music rightsholders and platforms, and richer experiences for music fans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that he &#8220;was instrumental in signing the industry\u2019s first major generative AI licensing framework&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Suno added that &#8220;during his six years as CEO of Merlin&#8221;, Sirota &#8220;scaled annual revenue from $900 million to $1.8 billion while rebuilding its technology infrastructure and expanding its data and licensing capabilities to meet the evolving needs of independent rightsholders.&#8221;
