{"id":251540,"date":"2026-02-20T16:05:05","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T16:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=251540"},"modified":"2026-02-20T16:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T16:40:12","slug":"virgin-music-group-completes-downtown-acquisition-pieter-van-rijn-named-coo-as-founder-justin-kalifowitz-steps-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/virgin-music-group-completes-downtown-acquisition-pieter-van-rijn-named-coo-as-founder-justin-kalifowitz-steps-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Virgin Music Group completes Downtown acquisition; Pieter van Rijn named COO as Downtown founder Justin Kalifowitz steps away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\">Virgin Music Group (VMG) announced on Friday (February 20) that it has completed its acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings LLC (Downtown).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\">The closure follows the European Commission&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universa-music-downtown-acquisition-cleared-by-eu-competition-regulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approval<\/a> of the deal last Friday (February 13), subject to Universal Music Group&#8217;s commitment to divest Downtown&#8217;s Curve royalty accounting business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">UMG\u2019s Virgin Music Group first <a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.universalmusic.com\/virgin-music-group-to-acquire-downtown-music\/\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the transaction<\/a> in December 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\">Alongside the deal&#8217;s completion, it was announced that <strong>Pieter van Rijn<\/strong> has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of VMG, having been CEO of Downtown since last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\">He will report to co-CEOs Nat Pastor and JT Myers and will continue to be based in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"justify\">Downtown Founder Justin Kalifowitz confirmed he is stepping away from the company he founded in 2007. More global participation. More direct relationships.
