Stat Of the Week is supported by\u00a0music data analytics firm\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/chartmetric.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chartmetric<\/a>.\n<hr \/>\n<p>The world\u2019s independent music publishers saw a 5.1% year over year increase in revenue in 2024, according to a new report from the Independent Music Publishers Forum (IMPF).<\/p>\n<p>The IMPF\u2019s <em>Global Market View<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMPF_Global-Market-View-Report-6th-Edition-December-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>, released on Wednesday (December 17), found indie publishers collected <strong>EUR \u20ac2.7 billion<\/strong> globally in 2024, or <strong>USD $2.9 billion<\/strong> at the average exchange rate for the year.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the global recorded music market grew <strong>4.8% YoY<\/strong> in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-recorded-music-revenues-hit-29-6bn-in-2024-up-4-8-yoy-users-of-paid-music-subscriptions-reach-752m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> data from <strong>IFPI<\/strong>, reaching <strong>$29.6 billion<\/strong>. The vast majority of that (<strong>\u20ac785.6 million<\/strong>, or <strong>$850.2 million<\/strong>) came from Western Europe, with Central and Eastern Europe bringing in <strong>\u20ac61.9 million<\/strong> (<strong>$67.0 million<\/strong>). We are seeing rapid growth, stronger local markets and a new generation of creators who are ready to reach global audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWith improving licensing structures and increasing professionalism across societies, the region is finally unlocking the value of its incredible repertoire. That excludes indie publishers with more than 5% market share, namely <strong>BMG<\/strong> and <strong>Kobalt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaken collectively, the independent music publishing community is still larger than the biggest major music publisher,\u201d noted <strong>Annette Barrett<\/strong>, President of IMPF and an executive at <strong>Reservoir<\/strong>, in her preamble to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett was referring to <strong>Sony Music Publishing<\/strong>, which slightly increased its market share in 2024 to <strong>25.2%<\/strong> from 24.9% a year earlier. However, the tussle at the top between Sony and Universal has put the squeeze on the independents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, smaller publisher acquisitions by the majors will almost certainly see the gap narrow further. The bigger indies like <strong>Kobalt<\/strong> and <strong>BMG<\/strong> have held steady, but there are concerns for the smaller players, particularly given the increasing dominance of digital.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEurope\u2019s position as the world\u2019s leading region for music royalties is no coincidence. It is the result of strong copyright protection, robust licensing frameworks and well-developed collective management infrastructures that ensure creators and rightsholders are properly rewarded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Claudia Mescoli, Edizioni Curci<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Tatjana Bukvic<\/strong>, Managing Director at <strong>Tin Drum Music<\/strong> and an IMPF Board member, said indie publishers managed to maintain their market share \u201cdespite strong competition for catalogs and ongoing waves of acquisitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After three years of declining market share, the steady print in 2024 \u201csays a lot about the spirit of entrepreneurship of IMPF\u2019s membership and the hard work put into their businesses by publishers around the world,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The report also focused on what it sees as a risk to songwriters\u2019 and music publishers\u2019 revenues from the proliferation of AI. The report cited recent studies from <strong>SGAE<\/strong> in Spain and <strong>KODA<\/strong> in Denmark, which backed up earlier reports that a quarter or more of music revenue could dry up in the age of AI. SGAE\u2019s study specifically estimated that around <strong>28%<\/strong> of copyright revenues in Spain will be at risk from generative AI by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtrapolating these figures from the global market value in 2024, this would mean that <strong>\u20ac3.5 billion<\/strong> in collections could be at risk, of which <strong>\u20ac465 million<\/strong> would directly come out of the revenues of independent publishers,\u201d the IMPF report stated.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If the balance tips too far towards non-human outputs, we risk ending up in a music landscape none of us would wish to be part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Annette Barrett, IMPF<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>IMPF is \u201cfully alert to this challenge,\u201d Barrett wrote in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with creators and rightsholder organizations, we are pressing policymakers to recognize that unlicensed AI use can have a devastating impact on our livelihoods. Without proper protection, transparency and compensation, a human-centered music ecosystem could quickly erode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cAs publishers, we believe deeply in human creativity and in the relationships we build with our authors and composers. This relationship is not just the foundation of our business; it is the heart of it. We can embrace innovation while defending the essential role of human creation.
