{"id":246750,"date":"2025-12-09T15:00:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T15:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=246750"},"modified":"2025-12-09T15:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T15:19:09","slug":"spotify-expands-official-music-videos-to-the-us-and-canada-alongside-new-video-formats-like-live-performances-and-covers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-expands-official-music-videos-to-the-us-and-canada-alongside-new-video-formats-like-live-performances-and-covers\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotify launches music videos in the US and Canada for Premium users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Music videos are officially rolling out in beta to Premium Spotify users across the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The feature, which Spotify says is one of the &#8220;most anticipated&#8221; among its users, will be available to all Premium users in both countries by the end of December, <strong>Spotify<\/strong> confirmed in an emailed statement to MBW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Premium subscribers in the US and Canada will have access to a &#8220;limited catalog&#8221; of official music videos, along with &#8220;new video formats&#8221; including live performances and cover versions.<\/p>\n<p>With this rollout, Spotify said that Premium users in the US and Canada will have access to music videos from artists like Ariana Grande, Olivia Dean, BABYMONSTER, Addison Rae, Tyler Childers, Natanael Cano, and Car\u00edn Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The streaming giant has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-challenges-youtube-launching-music-videos-for-premium-users-in-11-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered<\/a> music videos in beta since March 2024, when it introduced the product across <b>11<\/b> <b>markets, <\/b>excluding\u00a0North America. Each of the press releases announcing those deals referenced\u00a0audio-visual content.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-and-bmg-strike-new-direct-multiyear-us-publishing-licensing-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BMG<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/kobalt-inks-direct-licensing-deal-with-spotify-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kobalt<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0also struck direct deals with Spotify in the US this year, with\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/kobalt-inks-direct-licensing-deal-with-spotify-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the announcement<\/a>\u00a0for the latter agreement pointing to \u201ca licensing framework to enable\u00a0<strong>new formats<\/strong>, innovations, and potential to connect creators and fans alike\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Spotify\u00a0and the\u00a0National Music Publishers\u2019 Association (NMPA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-nmpa-strike-deal-to-expand-direct-licensing-audiovisual-opportunities-for-independent-publishers-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck a deal<\/a> that sees the launch of a new Opt-In Portal for NMPA members to \u201center into a direct license agreement for expanded audiovisual rights in the US\u201d.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p class=\"p1\">The move marks Spotify\u2019s first major market launch outside the beta phase and positions the company against <b>YouTube<\/b>, which dominates music video streaming globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to figures Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2024-10-15\/music-videos-in-beta-brings-an-improved-viewing-experience-to-new-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> in October last year, users who discover a song and then watch its video are <b>34%<\/b> more likely to stream that track again the following week compared to those who only listen to the audio. Songs found through music videos are <b>24%<\/b> more likely to be streamed or shared within seven days, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Spotify began beta testing in March 2024 with \u201ca limited catalog of music videos\u201d across select international markets. At that time, the company said it would gather feedback from both users and artists. Following the October 2024 expansion to 85 markets, Spotify had said that it \u201clook[s] forward to bringing it to even more users across more markets, including the US, in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The US and Canadian launch fulfill that plan.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">The feature is now available exclusively to Premium subscribers who pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/us\/premium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>$11.99<\/b> per month<\/a> in the US and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/ca-en\/premium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>CAD $12.69 <\/b>per month<\/a> in Canada. Two weeks ago, the <i>Financial Times <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fb490480-5d9a-495f-8c23-f34149bbcadb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, citing three people familiar with the matter,\u00a0that Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-plans-us-price-hike-in-q1-2026-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to raise<\/a> its Premium prices in the US as soon as the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The full release of Spotify\u2019s music video feature follows the launch of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-doubles-down-on-short-form-video-content-with-new-clips-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u2018Clips<\/b><b><i>\u2018<\/i><\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>feature in 2024, which are brief videos under 30 seconds long that allow artists to engage with their audience and promote their music. The videos resemble the format available on <b>TikTok<\/b> and <b>YouTube\u2019s Shorts<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In June of this year, Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/indie-artists-can-now-upload-videos-to-spotify-through-distrokids-video-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnered<\/a> with indie music distribution platform <b>DistroKid<\/b> to allow artists to upload music videos to Spotify via the <b>USD $99<\/b>-per-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/distrokid-officially-rolls-out-distrovid-music-video-distribution-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>DistroVid<\/b> service<\/a>. The videos can only be viewed in markets where Spotify rolled out its music video feature, the companies said at the time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">Spotify also offers full-length podcast videos<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, reporting that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4837408-spotify-technology-s-a-spot-q3-2025-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4837408-spotify-technology-s-a-spot-q3-2025-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>500,000<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4837408-spotify-technology-s-a-spot-q3-2025-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0video podcasts<\/a> are available on its platform<\/span>. During an <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4837408-spotify-technology-s-a-spot-q3-2025-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earnings call<\/a> last month, Spotify Chief Business Officer and Co-President <b>Alex Norstr\u00f6m<\/b> said: \u201cIn podcasts, more than <b>390 million <\/b>users have streamed the video podcast on Spotify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThat&#8217;s a <b>54%<\/b> increase year-over-year. We now have almost <b>500,000<\/b> video podcast shows on our platform. Time spent with video content has more than doubled year-over-year, driven mostly by video podcast. And this consumption has increased by more than<b> 80%<\/b> since the launch of the Spotify Partner Program or SPP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To further bolster its video strategy, Spotify in October signed a partnership with <b>Netflix<\/b>.
