This would bring the combined cost of a Premium subscription plus the Super Pro ad-on to around <strong>$18 per month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That price range correlates with what Spotify CEO <strong>Daniel Ek<\/strong> told analysts in July last year when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/daniel-ek-talks-new-spotify-deluxe-tier-price-hikes-the-companys-relationship-with-the-music-industry-and-more-on-q2-earnings-call12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that the company was working on a pricier tier.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Pricing will be different in various territories and will be less expensive &#8220;in less-developed markets,&#8221; <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the outlet&#8217;s sources, the rollout is being planned for this year. It added, however, that SPOT will be stacking them into one service,\u00a0 &#8220;starting with a more basic version this year and adding features in the years to come&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Spotify&#8217;s yet-to-be-introduced superfan tier was first referred to as &#8216;<strong>Music Pro<\/strong>&#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/super-premium-music-subscription-tiers-coming-in-2025-and-3-other-things-we-learned-from-universal-musics-boyd-muir-at-the-morgan-stanley-conference1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Boyd Muir<\/a>, Universal Music Group&#8217;s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, at <strong>Morgan Stanley<\/strong>\u2019s European Tech, Media, and Telecom Conference back in<\/span> November.<\/p>\n<p>Muir also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/super-premium-music-subscription-tiers-coming-in-2025-and-3-other-things-we-learned-from-universal-musics-boyd-muir-at-the-morgan-stanley-conference1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> that between 20% and 30% of paying music subscribers will eventually sign up for superfan subscription tiers. He said that he expects most music streaming services will introduce rival superfan services and that these subscription tiers would start rolling out in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce it\u2019s in the market, you sort of have to have a competitive offer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/425cbc57-fa9f-4f51-84ee-1ba57c50a15e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a> also reported over the weekend that Spotify is preparing to launch a superfan tier this year.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>The latest details about Spotify&#8217;s superfan tier arrive two weeks after Daniel Ek told analysts on SPOT&#8217;s Q4 earnings call that he is \u201ccoining\u201d 2025, \u201cthe year of <strong>accelerated execution<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify&#8217;s &#8220;year of <strong>accelerated execution<\/strong>\u201c follows the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-posts-1-5bn-annual-operating-profit-for-2024-as-subscriber-base-grows-to-263m-in-q41\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first full year of profitability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ek said on the company&#8217;s recent earnings call that Spotify is \u201cgoing all in on [its] core and investing in more music experiences&#8221; on the streaming platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Think video, think the higher-priced Premium tier that we\u2019ve discussed previously and new ways to bring fans and artists closer together,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In terms of Spotify&#8217;s talks with the record industry about the new superfan tier, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-02-16\/spotify-wants-to-sell-you-concert-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> over the weekend that Spotify has &#8220;secured the rights from many of its partners&#8221; to roll out the features included in &#8216;Music Pro&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em> suggested over the weekend, however, that Spotify &#8220;doesn\u2019t yet have rights from Sony<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">&#8220;. In recent weeks, Spotify has renewed its licensing deals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-and-spotify-ink-new-deal-overriding-controversial-crb-bundling-payment-structure-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warner Music Group<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-spotify-royalty-discount-bundle-audiobooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Universal Music Group<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>News of Spotify and Universal Music Group&#8217;s licensing renewal, which includes &#8216;<strong>Streaming 2.0&#8242;<\/strong> elements, arrived a few days before UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge confirmed in his annual memo to UMG staff that \u201cthe <strong>Streaming 2.0<\/strong> era\u201d had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming 2.0 phrase was introduced at UMG\u2019s <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-universal-music-capital-markets-day-opening-address-in-full-streaming-will-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capital Markets Day<\/a> in September, when UMG explained that <strong>\u2018Streaming 2.0\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0represented a new era of digital music focused on changes including:<\/p>\n<ul><li>Streaming subscription offerings becoming\u00a0<strong>\u2018segmented\u2019<\/strong>, with pricier options for\u00a0<strong>\u2018superfans\u2019; and<\/strong><\/li><li>Subscription\u00a0<strong>ARPU<\/strong>\u00a0(average revenue per user) moving upwards across music platforms, partly as a result of the aforementioned \u2018superfan\u2019-targeted offerings, and partly as a result of future\u00a0<strong>streaming price rises.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">\u201cBuilt on a foundation of artist-centric principles,\u00a0<strong>Streaming 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0will represent a new age of innovation, consumer segmentation, geographic expansion, greater consumer value, and ARPU growth,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-2025-memo-to-universal-music-group-staff-the-streaming-2-0-era-has-arrived1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Grainge<\/a> in his staff memo on February 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on Spotify&#8217;s most recent (Q4) earnings call, Daniel Ek was asked by Jessica Reif Ehrlich at BofA Securities about the UMG deal and specifically about any \u201cbenefits\u201d Ek could provide insight on that \u201cmay impact new services\u201d at the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Ek\u2019s response echoed one of the core fundamentals of the Streaming 2.0 proposition: <strong>user segmentation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"image-set\" data-title=\"\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-80x53.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-80x53.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-160x107.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-418x279.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-648x432.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-836x557.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/2EWAJAH-1296x864.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><i class=\"fas fa-search-plus magnifying-glass-icon\"><\/i><\/a><figcaption class=\"imagecredit\">Credit: Sipa US\/Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>&#8220;The next version of the music industry, I believe, is one where we&#8217;re going to tailor the experience of Spotify to all of these different subgroups. This is a product I\u2019ve been waiting on for quite some time as a super fan of music,\u201d said Ek on the company&#8217;s earnings call, in regards to the company&#8217;s superfan tier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m playing around with it now and it\u2019s really exciting. But that\u2019s obviously one of those things that we are talking to the music industry about bringing to the table.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Early access to concert tickets could be one the biggest selling points for Spotify&#8217;s superfan tier \u2013 as evidenced by recent demand for concerts by superstar artists ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-crashed-ticketmasters-site-and-sold-2-million-tickets-to-meet-demand-she-would-have-had-to-play-900-stadium-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Swift<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/on-oasis-ticketmaster-dynamic-pricing-uber-money-and-the-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oasis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/us\/news-today\/article\/beyonce-general-sale-tour-tickets-lfqrg2c7k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/metalinjection.net\/news\/black-sabbaths-final-show-sells-out-in-16-minutes-everyone-predictably-pissed-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Sabbath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">In the Summer of 2022, Spotify was<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-live-music-bounces-back-after-lockdown-spotify-ventures-into-concert-ticket-business-in-latest-test12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0testing<\/a>\u00a0concert ticket sales directly via the now-offline\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/tickets.spotify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018<\/a><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/tickets.spotify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spotify Tickets<\/strong><\/a><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/tickets.spotify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2019 site.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued at the time, a Spotify spokesperson suggested that the ticket-selling trial may or may not be expanded beyond this initial test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Spotify, we routinely test new products and ideas to improve our user experience,\u201d they said. \u201cSome of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-scales-back-ticketing-ambitions-after-job-cuts-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scaled back<\/a> its ticketing ambitions in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-15\/spotify-weighs-6-premium-for-added-features-access-to-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, as part of its Music Pro plans, Spotify is &#8220;testing various ways to sell concert tickets, such as giving fans access to presales or better seats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Bloomberg<\/em> reported that Spotify has &#8220;held preliminary talks with major promoters and ticket sellers but has yet to finalize its plans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">Recent stats from <a href=\"https:\/\/luminatedata.com\/reports\/yearend-music-industry-report-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luminate<\/a> show why superfans are becoming an increasingly important part of the music industry\u2019s monetization strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to Luminate&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-audio-streams-jumped-14-in-2024-to-4-8-trillion-as-pop-music-was-the-fastest-growing-genre-in-the-us\/\"><span class=\"s1\">end-of-year report<\/span><\/a> for 2024, <b>20%<\/b>\u00a0of US music listeners are superfans, up from\u00a0<b>18%<\/b>\u00a0in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Given that Luminate estimates\u00a0<b>75%<\/b>\u00a0of the US population are music listeners, this implies that\u00a0<b>15%<\/b>\u00a0of the general population are superfans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Luminate reported that Superfans spend <b>$113<\/b> per month on live music events on average, <b>66%<\/b> more than the average listener.
