Otherwise? It might do something altogether different.<\/p>\n<p>In conversation with MBW, SoundCloud&#8217;s CEO, <strong>Eliah Seton<\/strong>, today stressed that there is a &#8220;universe of opportunities&#8221; now available to the company he leads, after it became profitable in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Becoming a profitable growth company was mission-criticial to finally realizing the opportunity that&#8217;s available to SoundCloud,&#8221; said <strong>Seton<\/strong>. &#8220;[By becoming profitable] we&#8217;ve put ourselves in the driver&#8217;s seat. For the first time, we control our own destiny&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed on what that &#8216;destiny&#8217; might look like \u2013 following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/soundcloud-gears-up-sale-with-1bn-price-tag-sought-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that <strong>SoundCloud<\/strong> has <strong>started engaging with investment banks<\/strong> over a potential sale \u2013 Seton added: &#8220;To realize the commercial opportunity ahead of us, now is the time to consider all potential strategic alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That may mean <strong>SoundCloud<\/strong> being acquisitive, [buying] things ourselves. It may mean raising new capital; it may mean [striking] new strategic or financial partnerships, or a combination of the two. Or it may mean the sale of the company to the right long-term partner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To realize the commercial opportunity ahead of us, now is the time to consider all potential strategic alternatives. That may mean [SoundCloud] being acquisitive, buying things ourselves. It may mean raising new capital; it may mean [striking] new strategic or financial partnerships, or a combination of the two. Or it may mean the sale of the company to the right long-term partner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eliah Seton, SoundCloud<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whichever outcome is in <strong>SoundCloud&#8217;s<\/strong> future, says Seton, &#8220;it requires the best possible team to go and execute&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to today&#8217;s news: SoundCloud has hired former Kobalt executive\u00a0<strong>Tom Sansone<\/strong> as its new CFO\/COO, effective immediately.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #5 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #5 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #5 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p><strong>Sansone<\/strong>, who reports to Seton at SoundCloud, brings more than 20 years of global financial and operational experience with him across tech and music industries.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Sansone would presumably have been involved in four major transactions during his seven years as CFO of Kobalt Music Group:<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong>(i) <\/strong>The sale of Kobalt Capital&#8217;s &#8216;Fund I&#8217; to Hipgnosis Songs Fund for <strong>$323 million<\/strong> in November 2020;<\/li><li><strong>(ii)<\/strong> The sale of <strong>Kobalt Capital&#8217;s &#8216;Fund II&#8217;<\/strong> to <strong>KKR<\/strong> and <strong>Dundee Partners<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kobaltmusic.com\/press\/kkr-purchases-kobalt-capitals-fund-ii-music-rights-portfolio-for-approximately-11-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for around USD $1.1 billion<\/a> in October 2021;<\/li><li><strong>(iii)<\/strong> The sale of recorded music business <strong>AWAL<\/strong> (plus <strong>Kobalt Neighbouring Rights<\/strong>) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-music-buys-awal-and-kobalt-neighbouring-rights-from-kobalt-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kobalt to Sony Music in February<\/a> 2021 for <strong>$430 million<\/strong>; and<\/li><li><strong>(iv)<\/strong> The majority-acquisition of <strong>Kobalt&#8217;s<\/strong> music publishing business (plus <strong>AMRA<\/strong>) for approximately <strong>$750 million<\/strong> to Francisco Partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/kobalt-music-group-sold-to-us-based-private-equity-firm-francisco-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in September 2022.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n<p><strong>Update: Tom Sansone led the AWAL transaction in 2021. Although he was CFO of Kobalt from 2016-2022, Kobalt has confirmed that the Kobalt Fund I and Kobalt Fund II deals were led by Kobalt Capital CEO Johan Ahlstr\u00f6m; the 2022 Francisco Partners investment in Kobalt, meanwhile, was led by Kobalt&#8217;s current CFO, Catrin Drabble, alongside the Kobalt management team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Sky News<\/em>, SoundCloud&#8217;s current owners \u2013 including <strong>Raine Group<\/strong> and <strong>Temasek<\/strong> \u2013 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/soundcloud-gears-up-sale-with-1bn-price-tag-sought-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking at<\/a> a potential <strong>$1 billion-plus price-tag<\/strong> if a sale of the platform does happen in the months ahead.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>Prior to joining Kobalt in 2016, <strong>Tom Sansone<\/strong> was COO and CFO of online shopping\/lifestyle company <strong>Gilt Groupe<\/strong> for eight years, where he led the company through a period of significant growth.<\/p>\n<p>Sansone left Gilt Groupe in Q2 2016, after the announcement that the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/1\/7\/11588582\/hudsons-bay-confirms-250-million-acquisition-of-gilt-groupe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was to be acquired<\/a> by\u00a0Hudson\u2019s Bay Company \u2013 owner of Saks Fifth Avenue \u2013\u00a0for <strong>$250 million<\/strong>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in his career, Sansone worked for <strong>Arthur Anderson<\/strong> and<strong> PricewaterhouseCoopers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m incredibly excited about the opportunities for SoundCloud. I\u2019m looking forward to working with an incredible leadership team and Board to execute on the strategy to empower artists and fans to share and connect through music and to build on our strong financial footing,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sansone will be based in SoundCloud&#8217;s office in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>He serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Blair Academy and as an investor, advisor, partner and board member to a series of start-up companies.<\/p>\n<p>SoundCloud&#8217;s former CFO, <strong>Drew Wilson<\/strong>, is understood to have left the company.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>MBW <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-chasing-annual-profitability-soundclouds-already-there\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed shortly before the end of 2023<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>SoundCloud<\/strong>\u00a0was on course to post its first ever EBITDA-profitable year.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-December, the firm\u2019s internal guidance showed that was projecting annual revenues of\u00a0<strong>EUR \u20ac288 million (USD $310m)<\/strong>\u00a0for calendar\/fiscal 2023, up\u00a0<strong>7.5% YoY<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>9% YoY<\/strong>\u00a0at constant currency (USD).<\/p>\n<p>SoundCloud also forecast a\u00a0<strong>\u20ac2 million<\/strong>\u00a0positive EBITDA for 2023, representing a significant improvement from the\u00a0<strong>\u20ac29 million<\/strong>\u00a0negative EBITDA the firm posted in 2022.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1.png\" data-lightbox=\"image-set\" data-title=\"\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-80x47.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-80x47.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-160x93.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-320x187.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-418x244.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-648x378.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/12\/soundcloud-1-836x488.png 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><i class=\"fas fa-search-plus magnifying-glass-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/soundcloud-cuts-8-of-employees-as-it-chases-profitability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May last year,<\/a>\u00a0SoundCloud announced it was laying off\u00a0<strong>8%<\/strong>\u00a0of its global workforce \u2013 a move that affected around 40 employees.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Eliah Seton said: \u201cThis is a challenging but essential decision to ensure the health of our business and get SoundCloud to profitability this year.<\/p>\n<p>Raine and Temasek acquired stakes in\u00a0<strong>SoundCloud<\/strong>\u00a0in August 2017, in a majority-takeover\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/soundcloud-posted-a-82m-loss-in-2016-but-took-on-170m-in-investment-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worth $170 million<\/a>. The deal saw the streaming company<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/soundcloud-valued-300m-books-uncertain-future-major-label-rescued\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0valued at around $300 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2020, SoundCloud secured a further\u00a0<strong>$75 million<\/strong>\u00a0in investment from\u00a0<strong><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: 0px 0px; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; outline: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; SiriusXM [221 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/siriusxm\/\">SiriusXM<\/a><\/strong>.
